The Elf Fetish Super Deluxe Ultra Story Challenge Page!

Everyone likes story challenges, right?  Of course we do.  Not only do they provide us with a way to waste even more time at the computer thinking about Elves (mmm... Elves...), but they're also more fun than a bag of shaved weasels!  Yes indeed.  Finally, a reason to get started on your Thranduil/Gollum slash masterpiece!  "The challenge made me do it!" is one of the best excuses around.

So without further ado, I present the Official One-of-a-kind Exclusive Elf Fetish Super Deluxe Ultra Story Challenge (with turbo!).  Guaranteed to be the best fic challenge on this site!  Wow!

Challenge for November 28, 2003:

Meren Chrithmereth! Given that Elves like to party, and given that winter is deeply, deeply boring, there's no way they'd go without some sort of festive holiday shindig and merrymaking. Possibly involving gift-giving, mistletoe, and spiked eggnog. Write a story about the Elvish holiday traditions, including how those traditions came to be; a nostalgic look back at the old days and the origins of the holiday is required. Or simply write the holiday legend. Must include at least a few recognisable images and icons (for example, holly, stockings, decorated trees, snowelves, fruit cake, reindeer, whatever).

Random thoughts to consider: What is the holiday called, and why? Do they give gifts? Is Santa involved? Has the holiday strayed so far from its original meaning that young Elves need to be reminded? Do different kindreds of Elves have different traditions?

Challenge Rules

The challenges are open to everyone who wishes to participate.  All types of fics are accepted: gen, het, or slash, any pairing and any rating.  The story can be drama, comedy, AU, or whatever you like.  Stories can be based on any of Tolkien's Middle-earth works (LotR, Hobbit, Silmarillion, UT, etc.) at your choice.  They can be any length, from one chapter to many, but generally one-chapter stories are easier to write for challenge purposes.  Ficlets and drabbles will be accepted, but stories of over 1000 words are preferred.  Some challenges will give certain instructions that limit the choices (for example, a challenge to write Silmarillion-based AU Elrond slash), but unless otherwise stated the specifics are all up to you.

Naturally, the primary focus of the fic must be what is stated in the challenge, be this a character, place, time, or storyline.  There can be another secondary focus as well, as long as the primary focus remains challenge-oriented.

Since this is an Elf site, the main character of the fic must be a canon Elf unless stated otherwise.  If the challenge is about a non-Elf character (say, Aragorn), then the fic must include Elves in some major way.  Original characters are allowed, but unless the challenge states otherwise an OC should not be the main character.  Movie Elves who have been given names by Decipher cards (Saelbeth, Uruviel, Fereveldir, etc.) are counted as OCs for this purpose.

All challenge fics will be archived on this site in some special super-deluxe-ultra challenge fic place.  They can of course be posted to other lists and other archives, but a mention of the particular challenge and a link to this challenge page would be cool.

Members of the Yahoo! Groups elffetish mailing list can post their challenge pieces directly to the list. Fics by authors not on the mailing list can be sent directly to me (Claudio) via email at il_perfido@yahoo.co.uk for archiving fun.  In either case, write something like "challenge fic" in either the subject line or header information, and indicate in an author's note for which challenge you wrote the fic.

A new challenge will be posted with each site update, every two weeks.  However, this does not mean that the previous challenges will expire.  Authors can keep sumbitting new fics for old challenges as long as they like.

Have a good idea for a challenge that should be posted here?  Email it to me at the above address.

Happy writing!
