Fool's Gold (Lament for Haldir)

By Galahad

You rode up to the fortress gate
Borne on a sea of spears
Plucked from my dearest memories
To stem this tide of tears
A sight to cheer the flagging soul
The weak and the afraid
The warden of the Golden Wood
Has come to offer aid.
The Children of the Stars once more
Preserve the world of Men
Ai Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
Our arrows sing again.
And joined as once in ages past
We shared our Elven light
Together, in our quiet love
We stood against the night.
With hopeful heart I did believe
That you were here to stay
Sound horn and drum - the Orcs have come
To take that hope away.
I saw your body fall, my love
I saw your spirit fly
And all the treasures I remember
Leapt into the sky.
"I am alone!" cried out my soul
"What is this future worth?
The golden light of Lorien
Is gone from Middle-Earth."
We did not get forever, love
So soon, you had to go
I understand my own fate now
As I survey our foe.
The waves and waves of Uruk-Hai
Advance unstoppably
And crash against our fortress like
The unforgiving sea.
But now I find I do not fear
The darkness any more
I fear not death, nor any place
Where you go on before.
And so you have my solemn promise
Dawn I will not see
I fight for Men, but die for you
To chase your memory.
And reunited we will be
Two spirits on the air
As bright as the jealous green of your eyes
And the fool's gold of your hair.
